About McAfee VirusScan

  • What is Macintosh antivirus software?
Macintosh antivirus software keeps you and your family or business safe from dangerous viruses that can destroy your Macintosh computer, compromise your identity, and threaten the security of what you value.

  • Why do I need Macintosh antivirus software?
You need Macintosh antivirus software because viruses created by hackers and cyber criminals can be spread via infected email attachments, shared files, or malicious websites. Antivirus software is effective at both detecting and removing viruses if your Macintosh is already infected. It also detects and prevents virus infections.

  • How does Macintosh antivirus software work?
Macintosh antivirus software works just like the PC version. It scans a computer's memory and disk drives for viruses. If it finds a virus, the application informs the user and cleans, deletes, or quarantine any files, directories or disks affected by the malicious code.

  • Support for Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6 or later.

Installation Requirements

McAfee VirusScan 9 does not co-exist with any third party anti-virus software. Any such instance may result in unexpected issues.

  • Removing Third Party Anti-Virus Software and Associated Files

The McAfee VirusScan 9 installation process stops if you have previously installed Symantec, Intego, or Sophos anti-virus software on your Mac OS X computer.

After you uninstall Symantec, Intego or Sophos, some files may remain on your computer, which causes problems when you try to install McAfee Security. To resolve this issue, remove the following files (if they exist) before you continue with installation.

    Sophos (SAVI.framework)

    /Library/Frameworks/SAVI.framework

    Symantec (NAVLibX)

    /Library/Application Support/Norton Solutions Support/Norton Antivirus/Engine/NAVLibX

    Norton (NAVLibX.bundle)

    /Library/Application Support/Norton Solutions Support/Norton AntiVirus/Engine/NAVLibX.bundle

    VirusBarrier (VirusBarrier.kext)

    /Library/StartupItems/VirusBarrier/VirusBarrier.kext

    Intego VirusBarrier x5

    /Applications/VirusBarrier X5.app

  • Uninstalling the Existing Non-Windows Agent (NWA)

Before installing McAfee VirusScan 9, uninstall the existing NWA from your computer.

To uninstall NWA, type the following command in the Terminal window and press return:

    /Library/NETAepoagt/cmduninst

To open the Terminal application, double-click the application located under /Application/Utilities.

If you do not uninstall NWA before installing McAfee VirusScan 9, an alert appears at the initial stage of the installation process prompting you to uninstall the existing NWA.
