About kftpproxy

kFTP is a Mac OS X cocoa application that will start and stop the kftpd (Kerberos FTP Proxy) process for the user without the user needing to run kftpd from the command line. kFTP will also quit kftpd when the user quits the kftpproxy application or when the user logs off.

kftpd was written by the University of Washington and ported to Mac OS X by Iowa State University IT Services. The kFTP application was written by Rod Eldridge, Iowa State University, IT Services.

Downloading kftpproxy

Download either the Intel or PowerPC version of kFTP:

Software Download Mac OS X
kFTP (Intel) 524 KB 10.4.6
kFTP (PowerPC) 524 KB 10.2

Installing kftpproxy

  • If the .dmg image did not mount, double-click on the .dmg image file that was downloaded.
  • Drag the kFTP application to either /Applications or /Applications/Utilities.

Starting kftpproxy

You must already have Keberos tickets before running kftpproxy.

You can start the kFTP application two different ways, depending on your needs:

  • Starting the kFTP Application Manually

Run the kftpproxy application to start the FTP proxy process. When you quit the kftpproxy application, the FTP proxy process will also quit.

  • Starting the kFTP Application Each Time You Login

Add the kFTP application to your Startup/Login Items under System Preferences -> Account. Then, each time you login, the kFTP application will start the FTP proxy process. When you logoff, the kFTP application will automatically quit the FTP proxy process.

Configuring Proxy Settings

After starting the FTP proxy process, you will need to configure the applications the will use the FTP proxy. Specific instructions on how to configure Dreamweaver MX/2004 and GoLive are shown below. Other applications are not covered -- if you have instructions for a particular application, please forward them to here -- however, common to all applications, the proxy settings for the Proxy Server and Proxy Port are:

Proxy Server: 127.0.0.1
Proxy Port: 2021

Specific Configuration Instructions

  • Dreamweaver MX/2004

See How do I configure Macromedia Dreamweaver MX for Mac OS to use kFTP?

  • GoLive

    1. Select GoLive -> Preferences...
    2. In the Preferences window select Internet from the side menu.
    3. Check the Use FTP Proxy box.
    4. In the Host: field type 127.0.0.1
    5. In the Port: field type 2021
    6. Click the OK button to close the Preferences window.

Note: In GoLive 8.0 (CS2), there is an issue when setting up the new site server. You will need to click the "Advanced..." button and de-select the "Use Standard Framework" checkbox.
