How to Configure Mac OS X Mail

These instructions are only for configuring Mac OS X Mail to connect to the pop servers (i.e. your e-mail delivery is set to POP).

Configuring Mac OS X Mail Mac OS X 10.6 Run the Mail application (/Applications) and select Mail -> Preferences... Click on "Accounts" then click on the "+" button at the bottom of the accounts list box to add a new account. On the "Add Account" window: Full Name: your name Email Address: net-id@iastate.edu Password:   Click the "Create" button. On the "Incoming Mail Server" window: Account Type: Description: ISU Email Incoming Mail Server: pop-n.iastate.edu User Name: net-id Password:   What is my pop-n.iastate.edu address? The Mac OS X 10.6 Mail application requires using the real name for your pop server, as pop.net-id.mail.iastate.edu is not currently supported, and no workaround has been found yet. Your POP server can be found by logging into ASW and following the these links: ASW   -> Manage user     -> View/Edit your email delivery Your pop-n.iastate.edu server name will be shown at the top of the page: Currently your e-mail delivery is set to: POP POP-n.IASTATE.EDU Click the "Continue" button. On the "Incoming Mail Security" window: Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Authentication: Click the "Continue" button. On the "Outgoing Mail Server" window: Description: Iowa State University Outgoing Mail Server: mailhub.iastate.edu   Only use this mail server On the "Outgoing Mail Security" window: Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Authentication: Click the "Continue" button. On the "Account Summary" window: Account Description:  your description Full Name:  your name Email Address:  net-id@iastate.edu User Name:  net-id   Incoming Mail Server:  pop-n.iastate.edu SSL:  off   Outgoing Mail Server:nbsp; mailhub.iastate.edu SSL:  off   Take account online Click the "Create" button. Your account is now created. To enable this account, click on the your POP account under "Accounts": Click on the "Advanced" tab and set the following: Enable this account Include when automatically checking for new mail Remove copy from server after retrieving a message:           Prompt me to skip messages over   KB Check with your system administrator before changing any of the advanced options below: Port:  110 Use SSL Authentication:  Close the "Accounts" window and click on "Save" to save your new account information. Mac OS X 10.5 Run the Mail application (/Applications) and select Mail -> Preferences... Click on "Accounts" then click on the "+" button at the bottom of the accounts list box to add a new account. On the "Add Account" window: Full Name: your name Email Address: net-id@iastate.edu Password:   Click the "Continue" button. On the "Incoming Mail Server" window: Account Type: Description: ISU Email Incoming Mail Server: pop.net-id.mail.iastate.edu User Name: net-id Password:   Click the "Continue" button. Mail will try to connect to your incoming mail server: Checking connection to mail server "pop.net-id.mail.iastate.edu"... This will time-out. To save time, click the "Cancel" button and click the "Continue" button again. On the "Incoming Mail Security" window: Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Authentication: Click the "Continue" button. On the "Outgoing Mail Server" window: Description: Iowa State University Outgoing Mail Server: mailhub.iastate.edu   Only use this mail server Click the "Continue" button. Mail will try to connect to your outgoing mail server: Checking connection to mail server "mailhub.iastate.edu"... This will time-out. To save time, click the "Cancel" button and click the "Continue" button again. On the "Outgoing Mail Security" window: Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Authentication: Click the "Continue" button. Mac OS X 10.4 Run the Mail application (/Applications) and select Mail -> Preferences... Click on "Accounts" then click on the "+" button at the bottom of the accounts list box to add a new account. Under "General Information" enter the following: Account Type: Account Description: ISU Email Full Name: your name Email Address: net-id@iastate.edu Under "Incoming Mail Server" enter the following: Incoming Mail Server: net-id.mail.iastate.edu User Name: net-id Password:   Under "Outgoing Mail Server" enter the following: Outgoing Mail Server: mailhub.iastate.edu Use Authenticaton User Name:    Password:    Under "Advanced" verify that the following is set: Port:  110 Authentication:  Close the "Accounts" window and click on "Save" to save your new account information.
