Mac OS X v10.6: About Incompatible Software
Reported by Shane Palmer <sdpalmer@iastate.edu>

Apple has released a Knowledgebase article listing software that will be disabled at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3258.

attach 2.0.1
Reported by Tracy Di Marco White <gendalia@iastate.edu>

attach requires Rosetta to be installed on Mac OS X 10.6.

Update: attach is now a universal binary. See Mac OS X Software to download attach 2.0.1.

Cisco AnyConnect VPN 2.2
Reported by Shane Palmer <sdpalmer@iastate.edu>

The current Cisco AnyConnect VPN 2.2 client may not work after an upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6. You might get an error "Failed to Initialize VPN API, aborting". If you uninstall and reinstall the VPN client it appears to work correctly.

Eudora 6.2.4
Reported by John VanDyk <jvandyk@iastate.edu>

I upgraded to OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" today. A smooth upgrade except for one thing.

Eudora 6.2.4 for Mac OS X works on 10.6 (provided the optional Rosetta PowerPC-emulation code is installed), but not with kerberos.

To use kerberos-enabled POP at ISU, Eudora depends on the Code Fragment Manager library "Kerberos" which is part of the MIT Kerberos Extras for OS X package:

http://web.mit.edu/macdev/www/osx-kerberos-extras.html

The actual library is installed to /System/Library/CFMSupport/Kerberos and is a 983k file last updated in 2003. It's labeled version 4.2.

If the MIT Kerberos Extras for OS X have been installed, and thus this library is installed, Eudora will fail to launch with the following error:

Launch failed with error code -2821 (cfragInitFunctionErr) for application
/System/Library/Frameworks/Carbon.framework/Versions/A/Support/LaunchCFMApp

Eudora can be launched by removing the library. But then kerberos-enabled POP cannot be accomplished.

Fetch 5.5.2
Reported by Rod Eldridge <rod@iastate.edu>

Fetch 5.5.2 has been updated to offer full compatibility with Mac OS X 10.6. See Mac OS X Software to download Fetch 5.5.2.

Flash Player
Reported by Stephen Heideman <saheidem@iastate.edu>

I received a tip this morning that the OS10.6 installer will silently downgrade the version of Flash player when upgrading a fully patched earlier version of the Mac OS. Be aware that after installing OS 10.6 whether as an upgrade or as a new install, you will need to get Flash player updates to address known vulnerabilities in this popular player.

Update: An update to Flash Player is included in the Mac OS X v10.6.1 Update released September 10, 2009.

Mac OS X 10.6 Mail
Reported by Tracy Di Marco White <gendalia@iastate.edu>

The Mac OS X 10.6 Mail application requires using the real name for your pop server, as pop..mail.iastate.edu is not currently supported, and no workaround has been found yet. Your POP server can be found a number of ways including logging into ASW and following the links "Manage user" and then "View/Edit your email delivery".

Update: See How to Configure Mac OS X Mail for Mac OS X 10.6.

NetPrint 3.1
Reported by Rod Eldridge <rod@iastate.edu>

The CUPS backend script (netprint) for NetPrint 3.1 fails on Mac OS X 10.6. Because PaperCut is to replace NetPrint, NetPrint will not be made to work on Mac OS X 10.6.

Update: How to Install PaperCut and Define PaperCut Printers updated for Mac OS X 10.6.

Novell Netware Connection
Reported by Shane Palmer <sdpalmer@iastate.edu>

I have found that I can't currently connect to NetWare servers after upgrading to Mac OS X 10.6. After successfully typing in your username and password, and selecting a volume to connect to you will get an error:

"Connection failed. There was an error connecting to the server servername. Check the server name or IP address, and then try again."

I have Googled this issue and have seen similar reports. Several of them have mentioned reporting this bug to Apple. I will be doing so myself and suggest that anybody else that encounters this bug do so as well.

Update: Novell has released patches for compatibility with Snow Leopard: NW6.5 SP8 and OES2 SP1

OpenAFS 1.4.11
Reported by Jason White <jdwhite@iastate.edu>

OpenAFS 1.4.11 has been released for Mac OS X 10.6. See Mac OS X Software to download OpeAFS 1.4.11.

Mac OS X 10.6 telnet
Reported by Tracy Di Marco White <gendalia@iastate.edu>

The telnet program that comes with Mac OS X 10.6 does not have encryption. ITS is working on a telnet program that does encryption.

Update: See Mac OS X Software to download telnet 2.2.

McAfee VirusScan 8.6
Reported by Shane Palmer <sdpalmer@iastate.edu>

Be aware that if you upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6 that the installer will automatically disable VirusScan 8.6 as it is not compatible with the new OS. [...] McAfee has released a new version of anti-virus software as part of their new McAfee Security product which has been made available to ISU as part of our Enterprise agreement.

Update: See Mac OS X Software to download McAfee VirusScan 9.

Zephyr Utility 1.3
Reported by Tracy Di Marco White <gendalia@iastate.edu>

The Zephyr Utility's zephyr programs do not work with Mac OS X 10.6. ITS is working on the zephyr programs to make them compatible with Mac OS X 10.6.

Update: See Mac OS X Software to download Zephyr Utility 1.3.
